Qantas warns off strikers
Australian, Steve Creedy, Brad Norington
Facing threatened industrial action over Christmas, Qantas chief executive Geoff Dixon says the airline will 'take very action to ensure we fly'. The strike threat has been prompted by Qantas plans to give its non-executive directors a 66 per cent pay rise while workers receive about three per cent; and by the carrier's plans to start an attendants' base in London. Prime Minister John Howard says airlines qualify as 'essential services' and he does not rule out special legislation to ban industrial action shutting down the airline industry.
